Quick Hits: Sabres vs. Red Wings / at Canadiens / at Predators / at Stars

Buffalo took major strides in the last four games to set themselves up for a potential playoff run following the All-Star Break,

The four-game stretch before the All-Star Break started off with quite a performance from the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo fell behind late in the third and began to look like they were staring a tough division loss square in the eyes. But, Ryan O’Reilly’s late goal tied it and then All Star Kyle Okposo (nice ring to that, eh?) put home his 14th to grab Buffalo the bonus point.

The next night, the Sabres again found themselves behind in the third period. Cody Franson found himself surprisingly tying the game midway through the final frame. Even more surprising than that? How about Zach Bogosian unleashing a laser shot past Carey Price in overtime? Yeah, that seems surprising

Three nights later, Buffalo showed up to take on one of the hottest teams in the Western Conference. A late 4-2 deficit looked insurmountable, but Buffalo wasn’t having anything to do with that. With 5:40 left in the third, Brian Gionta cut the deficit to one. With 1:05 left, Kyle Okposo (All Star, if you forgot) tied the game. A gorgeous Jack Eichel goal in overtime would give Buffalo their first three-game back-to-back-to-back overtime win streak since November 2006. This goes in the books as the second three-game overtime win streak in franchise history.

Two nights following, Buffalo went to Dallas and got hosed. That’s all we have to say about that.

    • McCabe Hurt/Kulikov Back

Jake McCabe, arguably Buffalo’s second-best defenseman this season, separated his shoulder and will likely miss 10-14 days. Shit, man.

At least Dmitry Kulikov is back for the time being. Buffalo can’t have nice things at this point.

    • Cardiac Kids

The last 4 games have been something special for this young Buffalo Sabres squad. 3-1-0 in the last 4, collecting 6 of 8 points, in a very tight playoff race.

Buffalo overcame three late deficits to tie the game and then win in overtime. The fourth game in Dallas, the Sabres scored 2 goals that crossed the goal line but were ruled inconclusive after video review.

This team appears to be turning the tide following a roller coaster season to this point.

    • 400 Points

Remember that late dope goal that Kyle Okposo netted against the Nashville Predators? Yeah, that goes in the books as his 400th career point.

In 576 games, Okposo has 154 goals and 246 assists.

400 points rank Okposo 8th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft Class, behind only Nicklas Backstrom, Phil Kessel, Jonathan Toews, Claude Giroux, Milan Lucic, Jordan Staal and Bryan Little,

    • Kane Doing Things

Per Sabres PR Department – Evander Kane has scored each of his 12 goals this season in his last 24 games, including a team-high 11 even-strength goals. In the period since scoring his first goal of the season on Dec. 3 vs. Boston, he is tied for 10th among all NHL skaters in goals (12) and is ranked second in even-strength goals (11). (All rankings before Jan. 25 games)

Things are quite tight in the Atlantic.
Drama in the Wild Card race too.
Buffalo still has some work to do, but the playoffs aren’t out of the picture.
