TTP – “Three Big Things” from the preseason comeback in Detroit

Last Friday night, many throughout the Western New York found themselves stapled to their couches, giddy with anticipation..

Ah, who am I kidding?

The beginning of preseason football is a wonderful time of the year, but if your heart rate jumped above a normal resting cadence, there might be something to worry about.

While the big names like quarterback Josh Allen and wide receiver Stefon Diggs saw no action on the field, there were some storylines and notable names that merit at least a slight discussion.

The game itself is what one might expect in Week One of the preseason – a 16-15 barnburner, which featured a late comeback drive that was authored by Buffalo Bills quarterback Jake Fromm.

For those wondering – no, there never was a time imaginable that we thought we would see that sentence formed in such a structure, but here we are.

Running down the stat sheet following the game, a few different things stuck out:

  1. An Annual Preseason Meeting with the Lions
The Buffalo Bills have made a point to always play the Detroit Lions in a preseason game. A quick search on the internet shows that the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions have met in a preseason matchup in 18 of the last 20 preseasons. The only times Buffalo did not face Detroit? 2018 and 2020.

Seems like we have ourselves an old-fashioned preseason rivalry here. A fun thing might be to go back and comb through the stats sheets of those 18 games but we only have so many hours in a day.

  2. Greg Rousseau’s Preseason Debut
We warn you that this is only the preseason but my goodness, what a preseason debut for first-round pick Greg Rousseau.

His explosiveness off the snap, ability to use his length and his motor were all on display in Rousseau’s preseason debut.

Most impressive would clearly be Rousseau’s handling of fellow first-round pick Penei Sewell, which led to a sack of Jared Goff on the Lions’ opening drive.

  3. Davis Webb, Forcing The Hand?
Coming into this preseason, experts across the internet were back-and-forth on the thought of how many quarterbacks the Buffalo Bills would carry on their opening weekend 53-man roster.Logic would clearly point toward Buffalo opening up with Josh Allen and Mitch Trubisky on the roster, which would allow for flexibility elsewhere.

After Friday night’s performance, one would think Davis Webb has earned a longer look before Buffalo makes their final roster decision in a few short weeks.

Webb looked very comfortable operating in Buffalo’s offense, completing 11 of 16 passes for 90 yards and 1 TD. Webb also ran the ball twice for 26 yards.

Last season, Webb served as a very valuable piece of the Bills’ practice squad. Webb’s practice squad performance even earned him a late season Covid-19 roster call-up, as a reward.

When that main roster call-up was announced, Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll told media members, “He’s (Webb) one of the best teammates that I’ve ever seen. He’ll work on special teams if he needs to work on special teams, he’ll work on the defensive show team. He does an unbelievable job of helping Josh prepare for games. He spends a lot of time with [assistant quarterbacks coach] Shea [Tierney] and going through the team we’re about to play. He just has his hands in so many different things for us. He’s such a valuable part to our team.”

With last season’s performance, coupled with a strong performance against Detroit, Davis Webb might just before forcing Buffalo’s hand into capturing a roster spot.
