Quick Hits: Sabres @ Oilers
For the final time in the history of Rexall Place, the Buffalo Sabres would take the ice to take on the Edmonton Oilers. Unfortunately for Buffalo, the Oilers had no interest in giving the Sabres a lasting memory.
Buffalo started things off tonight on the right foot offensively. Jack Eichel netted his 9th goal of the season, at 6:58 of the first period. Following Eichel’s goal, things would go downhill fast for the Sabres.
Edmonton would go on to score three straight unanswered goals before the first period concluded.
Teddy Purcell’s 5th goal of the season, at 9:36, tied the game up at one. A few minutes later, at 16:06, Jordan Eberle put home his 5th goal of the season.
To top things off, Oilers’ leading-point getter Taylor Hall would convert on a power play opportunity. Hall’s 11th goal of the season, at 18:55, would complete the landslide for the Oilers.
After one disastrous period, Buffalo trailed Edmonton 3-1.
It would take more than half the second period for a team to get on the board. Luckily for the Sabres, it was one of their own.
Ryan O’Reilly’s 9th goal of the season at 13:22, on the power play, pulled Buffalo within one goal.
Things seemed to be going in Buffalo’s direction, until Edmonton would take the reigns back from the Sabres.
Luke Gazdic’s 1st of the season would be the nail in Buffalo’s coffin for the evening. At 17:43 of the second period, Buffalo would see themselves trailing 4-2.
The Sabres tried to mount a third period comeback (outshot Edmonton 16-6) but nothing would materialize at Rexall Place.
Buffalo would see themselves fall to the Edmonton Oilers, 4-2. This loss drops Buffalo’s record to 11-13-3 on the season. Buffalo’s 25 points keep them locked into 7th place in the Atlantic Division and 13th in the Eastern Conference.
The Sabres play on Monday night in Vancouver against the Canucks, as their Western Conference road trip continues.

Man, what a boring game to watch tonight.
Really, aside from the two Sabres goals, it was real hard to keep my attention on what was happening throughout the game.
I mean, I was at a movie for most of the first and second period so..yeah, I’m not sorry about that one after how this snoozefest played out.
For anyone who wants to know, I actually did enjoy Victor Frankenstein. I would see it if that is something you might be interested in.
No, Victor Frankenstein (played by James McAvoy) is not talking about the Buffalo Sabres offense. LOL. I crack my self up.
- Eichel vs. McDavid
This one is a cop-out, but let me have it.
Jack Eichel scored a goal tonight, eat it Edmonton! Yeah, who cares that Connor McDavid is currently recovering from his broken collarbone. I’m not counting that.
The goal tally is Jack Eichel – 1 and Connor McDavid – 0. Also, who cares that Edmonton won the game. Shut your mouth.

- Farewell to Rexall Place.
Tonight’s game marked the final time the Buffalo Sabres will play against the Edmonton Oilers in Rexall Place, the 2nd-oldest arena in the National Hockey League.
Starting next season, the Oilers will play in the gigantic Rogers Place. It’s ridiculously massive and Edmonton should be ashamed for creating such a monstrosity.
Anyways.
Sabres (before tonight) 9-22-3 (W-L-OTL/T) at Rexall Place. The Sabres close out their road tenure at Rexall Place with a record of 9-23-3 (W/L/OTL & T). Not good at all. Edmonton are not good hosts, in my honest opinion.
Another cool fact passed along by the Buffalo Sabres: head coach Dan Bylsma’s first career NHL goal came at Rexall Place on November 27, 1996 with Los Angeles Kings.
A trip down memory lane for Bylsma, I’m sure.
